Oban is a charming seaside town and serves as one of The Majestic Line’s key cruise departure points. It is the perfect starting point for an unforgettable Scottish adventure with its centuries of history and stunning landscapes. Whether departing on a Majestic Line cruise or just exploring the area, here’s everything you need to know about Oban, from how to get there to the best attractions, shops and historical sites.
Oban’s history dates back centuries, but it was the construction of the distillery in 1794 that marked the development of the town. The arrival of the railway in 1880 cemented the town as a Scottish hub, helping it to grow into the bustling port it is today. Oban became a critical point for the Royal Navy in World War II with its natural harbour serving as a much-needed safe haven for vessels. Taking a walk around the many historical sites, memorials and museums in the town gives you a glimpse into Oban’s rich history.
McCaig’s Tower, sitting high above the town centre, was originally built in 1897 to provide work for the town and to leave a lasting monument for the McCaig family. The walk is well worth it as the views are incredible across to the Isles. It is also known to have been modelled on the Rome Colosseum.
Oban Distillery is a must-visit if you like whisky. It is one of the oldest Scottish distilleries and has a fascinating history with a rich, peaty whisky, crafted since 1794.
Dunollie Castle, once the stronghold of Clan MacDougall, is found a short walk from the town centre. Now a ruined fortress, this castle, dating back to the 13th century is a must-see.
Oban Harbour and Corran Esplanade – take a leisurely walk through the town centre, passing busy Oban Harbour and pontoons where you will find The Majestic Line boats each week before meandering along Corran Esplanade.
Oban War and Peace Museum, situated on Corran Esplanade at the Oban Times Building, is a fascinating little place containing an amazing collection of historical artefacts from the war years. A little further on is the Oban War Memorial, a moving tribute to the fallen from World War I and II.
