Explore one of Scotland’s most famous destinations with our new 10-night itinerary which circumnavigates the Isle of Skye. The West coast of the Misty Isle offers epic scenery with cliffs that rival St Kilda, as well as the ever-present Cuillin mountain range in the background. Popular anchorages include the deeply indented sea loch of Loch Dunvegan, where Dunvegan Castle is the ancestral home of Clan MacLeod, and Loch Harport, home of the Talisker Distillery. A leisurely cruise passes Macleod’s Maidens, impressive sea stacks off the island’s north west coast. It also takes in Loch Scavaig, where you can land and walk the short distance to the beautiful fresh waters of glacial Loch Coruisk. Head north to the Shiant isles a breeding ground for colonies of puffins and razorbills.
The east coast of Skye is no less spectacular. Look out for Kilt Rock, the basalt columns of which fall to the sea like kilt folds. Here, there are kittiwakes, fulmars and a waterfall that plunges 100m to the shoreline below. Also within reach is The Isle of Raasay, a haven for walkers and wildlife spotters looking to catch a glimpse of golden eagles and the island’s very own vole. Remote Loch Hourn and Loch Nevis, separated by three Munros, are stunning stops for lunch or an overnight stay. Among them is the village of Inverie and The Old Forge, a pub that can be reached only by sea. Loch Duich is another wonderfully idyllic anchorage, which affords the opportunity to go ashore and explore Eilean Donan Castle, the most photographed monument in Scotland.
