6 reasons you should choose a small ship cruising holiday

Tuesday, 22 November 2022

We might be biased but we think a small ship cruising holiday is the best kind of holiday!

The popularity of small ship cruising has increased significantly over the past few years so here are 6 reasons why this should be your next adventure.

  1. A room with an everchanging view
Booking a small ship cruise will not only mean you unpack once, each time you look out of your window or porthole, you can marvel at the everchanging scenery. Even at anchor, the gentle swinging round the anchor chain will guarantee a 360 degrees panorama view while you rest, dine or relax.
  2. Go where the wind, weather and tides take you
Onboard a small ship, you are not dictated to by set itineraries or short quick visits to crowded towns, your friendly Skipper will set the course for the day depending on the current conditions, and the wishes of the guests. Stopping to watch nesting sea eagles or cruising to the perfect isolated inlet is par for the course on a small ship.
  3. Get up close and personal with the locals
Small ships are the perfect size to visit the less touristy hot spots and even uninhabited islands and idyllic deserted bays. Not only will you get the chance to visit wonderful local communities, you may also experience the culinary delights of Scottish local produce as your chef picks up local delicacies on the way. Every day there are new anchorages, shore stops and places to explore without the big cruise ship crowds. With the limited number of guests on a small ship, you can be guaranteed to have a low impact on the environment, its wildlife and its people.
  4. Solo travellers, yes please!
Solo travel has been growing steadily in popularity and small ship cruising is paving the way to being the most cost-effective way to holiday as a single traveller. Single supplements are a common theme in the bigger cruise ships and on other holidays however onboard some small ships, cabins can be held exclusively for single occupancy. With a double ensuite cabin for single occupancy onboard every ship, it’s a no brainer for the single traveller. Small ships tend to have a house party atmosphere onboard too with communal dining around one table, so it is ideal for those travelling alone.
  5. A family affair
Small ships can offer an opportunity to book the whole boat for private charter; the ultimate way to holiday with those closest to you. As family holidays continue to rise, what better way to gather three or more generations onboard your very own floating accommodation.
  6. Personal service that’s second to none
With just a handful of guests aboard (some have as little as 12 passengers) you will be rest assured of a friendly atmosphere where everybody knows your name. Personal preferences are remembered such as your favourite tipple being made by your welcoming host each evening to the Skipper creating a bespoke itinerary to suit the guests’ requirements.

There is no better way to explore the Outer Hebrides and to have a unique chance to visit St Kilda than on the Glen Etive with an experienced, efficient and pleasant crew. In providing a level of service and giving us every chance to see wildlife on land and at sea, the crew earned huge respect and admiration. We strongly recommend this cruise to others who may wish to explore the Outer Hebrides.
